IP-BQ Ab-Initio preparation

The Basic Qualification ip (Ab-Initio) is the entry screening for candidates starting flight training from scratch. It is run by EAQC and accepted across the Interpersonal partner network, so one pass opens several airlines and flight schools at once.

The 12 modules you will actually sit

EAQC lists the Ab-Initio Basic Qualification as covering technical comprehension, English proficiency, mathematics, logical reasoning, spatial orientation, concentration, mental arithmetic, perception, multi-tasking, memory action, psychomotor ability and a personality questionnaire.

Climbout trains the cognitive and psychomotor side of that list — memory, orientation, psychomotorics, reasoning, mathematics, physics, technical comprehension, English and aviation knowledge. The personality questionnaire is deliberately not something we drill, and you should be wary of any provider that claims to coach it: these instruments include consistency checks, and answering strategically rather than honestly is the one reliable way to fail them.

Why one day is harder than it sounds

Candidates rarely fail on any single module in isolation. What catches people out is sustaining accuracy across a full day, after several hours of concentration, with the timer visible. Practising a module once when fresh tells you very little about how you will perform on it at hour six.

This is the reason Climbout separates practice mode from timed test mode. Practice mode gives you the explanation immediately so you can build the underlying skill. Test mode withholds it and runs the clock, so you learn what your accuracy actually does under pressure.

How long to give yourself

Because the certificate stays valid for 24 months and can be repeated, there is no structural reason to rush a booking. Psychomotor and multi-tasking ability in particular respond to spaced repetition over weeks rather than to cramming — these are motor-skill tasks, and the research on motor learning is consistent that distributed practice beats massed practice.

A practical pattern is short, frequent sessions across the categories you score worst on, with a full timed run every week or two to check whether the improvement holds when the pressure is on.

Common questions

How long is the IP-BQ Ab-Initio valid?
The certificate is valid for 24 months from the date you pass, and EAQC states it can be repeated at any time.
What does the IP-BQ Ab-Initio cost?
EAQC lists the Ab-Initio Basic Qualification at €359 including VAT. That fee goes to EAQC and is separate from any preparation you buy — Climbout is a preparation platform and does not administer the test.
Where does the test take place?
At the EAQC Testcenter interpersonal III in Hamburg, over a single day.
Can I prepare for the personality questionnaire?
You can familiarise yourself with the format, but you should not try to game it. These questionnaires include internal consistency checks designed to detect strategic answering, so inconsistent responses are more likely to hurt you than a candid profile would.

Practise the cognitive modules before you book
